Local Lunch Recommendations – Eastside Portland
At CENTRL, we know there’s more to work than just showing up to the office. That’s why we choose locations that are in vibrant, walkable (and bikeable) neighborhoods where a thriving and inspiring entrepreneurial spirit can be felt while simply strolling down the street.
Fortunately, many of these entrepreneurs not only feed new ideas, they feed people, too. As a result, this is a neighborhood teeming with amazing locally owned lunch spots, many of them steps away from our Eastside location. With so many options, though, we know that deciding where to grab a bite can sometimes feel like quite the dilemma.
With this in mind, here’s a short list of our favorite lunch spots. Of course, we’re only scratching the surface here, but you can’t go wrong with any of these locally owned Eastside Portland eateries.
Nong’s Khao Man Gai
khaomangai.com
609 SE Ankeny St, Portland, OR 97214
Opened by Bangkok native Nong Poonsukwattan, Nong’s Khao Man Gai offers a soul-nourishing chicken and rice dish that has a cult following both in Portland and around the world. Be sure to order the namesake dish. Poonsukwattan’s faithful rendition of khao man gai consists of poached chicken served with aromatic rice cooked in chicken stock; a garlicky, spicy sauce for dipping; cucumbers; cilantro; and a little bit of chicken broth. There is a vegetarian version and Coca-Cola-braised pork, but you’re really here for the khao man gai.
Snappy’s
makeitsnappys.com
2728 SE Ankeny St, Portland, OR 97214
It may be a little difficult to locate Snappys — it’s tucked away in the lobby between Marukin and Nong’s — but you can’t miss its retro decor. And from this tiny space they serve some seriously delicious sandwiches. We highly recommend the beef and cheddar, which comes with onion and horseradish. Also, the staff at Snappy’s are always welcoming and provide excellent customer service.
Sizzle Pie
sizzlepie.com
624 E Burnside Ave Portland OR 97214
Simply the best pizza (vegan or otherwise) in East Burnside. While they deliver on the classics, they’re known for some of their own signature twists, like the Aardvark habanero sauce blended with classic marinara. The thin crusts are amazing and we love that you can build your own pizza to your liking. Oh, and their garlic knots with cashew pesto are off the charts delicious.
CENTRL Loves Local Businesses
Beyond our workspace, what makes our location special is our neighbors — local businesses like us — who form the backbone of our community. That’s why we encourage you to support our neighbors here on the Eastside. And whether you are looking for the perfect slice of pizza, taco, or a spot to grab a beer after work, always feel free to ask our staff for a recommendation. We’re here to help!
